I don't think the Engels quote should be startling to Marxists, but it may
appear so to some who downplay the role of competition for the operation
of capitalism.  The cause for the confusion by those Marxists may have
to do with assuming that the subjects introduced (in terms of the order of
presentation) at a higher level of abstraction are somehow more necessary
and essential than categories necessary for a understanding of the subject
matter at a more concrete level.  Or, its genesis could be a tied to the
acceptance by some of theories of "state capitalism", which likewize
downplay the role of competition.
