Of all the writings of the late Ernest Mandel, this is probably the 
one that listmembers have not read.  

Excerpts from _Delightful Murder: A Social History of the 
Crime Story_  (Minneapolis, University of Minnesota Press, 1984) are at:
Interesting commentary above on the role of crime in capitalist
societies and how criminals have been viewed at different times as
being either villains or heroes.

I can't say that I am particularly a fan of the "crime story" genre.
However, those who are might also be interested in the following
