A reply to Paul C's ope-l 2120

As long as one DOES NOT ask--and forthrightly answer--whether the
views that have been attributed to someone accurately reflect what
s/he thought, said, and wrote, one is allowing the historical
record to be falsified. One is "using" someone else for one's
own purposes, however well-intentioned and noble, but making it
all the more difficult for others to discover and clarify what that
person had to say.
