Point taken--the phrasing was sloppy, though I suspect that people were
able to understand what I meant. But, a question: why 3 commodities?
would seem entirely sufficient to have an exchange-ratio that differs
fromthe value ratio, therefore the possibility of surplus transfer and a
to distinguish price from value, expressed in common units.

With two commodities barter is enough. You need at least 3 for
one of them to be distinguished as the one in which all otheres
express their value.
