If Postone is correct in believing that Marx produced a Critique of Political Economy, but not a critical political economy, why does Marx in his inaugural address to the First International refer to:

"the great contest between the blind rule of the supply and demand laws which form the political economy of the middle class, and social production controlled by social foresight, which forms the political economy of the working class." ? http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1864/10/27.htm

Postone argues in a sexed-up way that "Brenner, Arrighi, and Harvey do not succeed in fully elucidating the historical core of capital in a way that points to the possibility of its historical overcoming." But Postone himself does not do this either - he just engages in "critical criticism" without it being clear what could supplant capitalism.

Imagine a bunch of greying New Left hippies being in charge of economic policy - would this create a better life for people?
