List members might like the refreshingly different perspective on this
thinker's contribution to Marxist economics provided by:

Porter, T. M. (1986). The rise of statistical thinking 1820-1900, Princeton:
Princeton University Press

On page 253 von B.'s essay is dismissed in a line as "rather turgid
commentary on Marx" (I like the "rather" -- even the turgidness does not
rise to greatness...) before Porter goes on to discuss Bortkiewicz's more
interesting work on such things as the incidence of death from mule kicks
among Prussian soldiers.
