Installing Exceed

Your first step toward opening an X-window session on Ricardo is installing Exceed, an X-emulator program that runs under Windows 95. WFU has a site license for Exceed, which is available via the keyserve system. To run the program you must first run a setup utility; this copies certain essential files to your computer, but the bulk of the files remain on the server so Exceed will not eat up much space on your hard drive (a couple of megabytes or so). I suggest you print out these directions before starting. You should probably close down Netscape before starting the actual installation of Exceed.

  1. First, install the Key Access software. From the Windows Start menu select Run, and type the following into the box that appears:

    \\lserve\pub\keyaccess5\setup.exe

You should be able to accept the defaults that are offered by the setup program.

  2. Again, from the Windows Start menu select Run. This time type:

    \\acfiles\pcnfs\exceed95\userins\setup.exe

  3. Choose ``OK'' to start installation.

  4. Choose ``OK'' again to accept the offered home directory for Exceed.

  5. When prompted for the user directory for Exceed, type

    c:\userdata\exceed95

Please ensure that you use exactly this name!

  6. When prompted for a keyboard file, choose ``OK'' to accept us.kbf.

  7. Next you'll see a prompt for a password, to password-protect the program called Xconfig that you will later run to configure the X emulator. A password here is unnecessary: choose ``Skip''.

  8. You'll be prompted re. the creation of a Program Group for Exceed. You probably want to say Yes here, to have the Exceed items added to your Windows menus.

  9. Next you'll get a little message about re-starting Windows to make various settings take effect. Answer ``Yes'' to restart Windows.

  10. When Windows starts up again, pop up the Start menu and choose Run... Type in the following:

    \\ricardo\programs\keyacces\exceed2.bat
You are now ready to test-drive Exceed... if you have a user account on Ricardo (if not, contact Allin). From the Windows Start menu, go to Programs, Exceed, Exceed (with a little red X icon). After a moment you should see a graphical login screen for Ricardo. Type your username, hit the enter key (note: not the tab key) then type your password. Welcome to the world of X!

On first starting an X session on Ricardo you will be presented with some basic help. That help is also available in an html version; in addition there's info available on getting X access to ac.
